Kim Soonok’s World of Anti-Concrete Painting
The power of Earth released from static images
Shin Hangseop (Art critic)
The world exists in the same form to all of us. Nevertheless, each of us perceives and understands it in different ways. Perhaps the reason of where painters are coming from is different ways of viewing the world. Differently expressing at the same object is based on different ways of understanding, that is, individual thoughts and philosophies, or their own views of life. Therefore, we understand the painting is not just a technical product created my skillful hands.
Kim soonok also views the world in her own way. Her standpoint revealed through paintings comes from the point that she never misses the beauty as an artistic value in any circumstances. It might be natural a painter pursues beauty. However, the beauty is not a common value which shall be given to every painter because there are quite a number of occasions that some are not able to face the nature of beauty in front of beautiful materials or objects by wandering around outer manifestations. In other words, not all paintings have an artistic value in beauty.
Kim soonok always focuses on beauty in painting any material or object. Further exactly speaking, she establishes certain standards of her own on ' the beautiful painting' inside her. As for some required conditions to those standards, one of them is an oriental emotion, that is, beauty of blank space, which occupies her paintings. Beauty of blank space is one of aesthetic values in Oriental painting, and is associated with materials and techniques such as hanji (traditional Korean paper), ink stick, and writing brush. Oriental painting has different formative characteristics from shading or perspective technique in Western painting, from the point of view as aesthetics of lines. However, how does she overcome the difference from such Oriental paintings by using different materials or techniques with oil, water, and acryl paints?
In 1990s, she focused on Korean subject materials such as Buddha image, Goryeo celadon, Three King period's earthenware, and traditional living articles by applying the concept of Oriental painting's blank space. Of course, Oriental painting's blank space refers to the non-expressive space which uses the paper as a painting material. However, blank spaces which were used in her paintings are of the relative concept to subject materials, and thus they refer to surrounding blank space around subject materials. Such blank space's surroundings are treated as abstract images instead of empty canvas space itself, and so it can be said that it is not the empty space of ink-and-wash paining. However, stillness is woven into blank space's surrounding which is filled with abstract images. Though such blank space has no specific forms but it is filled with some abstract images, it gives a sense of stillness just like emptiness.
What is ever the identity of the stillness formed in her paintings? It is the one which is close to Oriental painting's beauty of blank space. It is obviously different from the blank space, but it is exists in such tension, restraint, or mind as a relative value to the physical beauty which could be perceived from Oriental painting. Of course, there is a great deal of implications in the visual image which is created by the abstract image itself. However, the beauty of stillness comes to exist through some kind of invisible layers where the mind can stays just like floating air on such a visual image. In case of the still-life painting which uses 'Celadon kettle (Chong-ja tugak-yeondang-chomun kettle) and plate' as a subject matter, it has abstract horizontal stripes on the bottom and the darker background, and this results in some kind of inviolable tension or stillness on the screen. It can be said that the identity of such tension or stillness is the very shade of thinking. Through the nature of visible objects, the space of Oriental thinking is created, which enable us to perceive their existence. Consequently, the blank space in Oriental paintings also becomes the space for thinking.
As we can guess from the above, there are some mental places which are comparable to Oriental blank space in any material or object. Not only Korean subject materials such as traditional living articles or Buddha's images, ordinary landscape paintings provide us with the same emotions. In one word, it is that her works are created by a Korean who is constitutionally and mentally infected with Oriental thinking and emotions, regardless of subject materials or objects. Though she grew up and completed her studies in Paraguay, her aesthetic consciousness and aesthetic sensitivity are associated with temperamental characteristics with the Korean as they are.
Shall it be so then? It is surely no accident that we can read some kind of emotions close to the blank space in Oriental painting from her ‘Waterfall’, which is a subject and material we can not leave out of discussion in association with her own success as an artist.
In a sense, the waterfall which demonstrates the vitality of the magnificent Mother Nature in an extreme way, might be a conflicting image to the stillness. There seem to be no room for the image of stillness to be interfered into erupting waterfall with such an enormous energy. However, it is so amazing to see that we can find some kind of space which is filled with stillness even in such a roaring waterfall image of her work. What make us think so? She described the waterfall but did not focus on its dynamic image. By perceiving the waterfall as just a material object, she tried to see the contemplated beauty, not its reality in form. Expressing a material object as it is, never surpasses the reality of the actual waterfall. Was it because she perceived this? By avoiding cling to the reality itself, she did not miss her own view that the waterfall is a just a part of Mother Nature, no matter how enormous power it might have.
Her painting for the waterfall is very realistic. So it is shown very energetic. The full screen is being filled with the power which surpasses appreciators. Besides the prejudice on its substantive power which the waterfall has, it is unavoidable to have a feeling of visual oppression from her painting. Also, it is hard to control in echoing sentiments. The painting really releases such a powerful energy. In particular, when we encounter her painting of Iguassu Falls which separates 3 countries of Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, we realize its greatness once again. Natives' holding Iguassu Falls sacred as an object to be worshiped is a kind of obedience to its absolute power after all. We can sense her Iguassu Falls is not different from theirs through her painting. Sentiments thrilled through the entire body are projected into the painting as it is. We can find some different points from the painting which is made through seeing Iguassu Falls a couple of times, and it is the very the substantive feeling of the person who use his/her intuition towards the power of the earth. Doesn't it come from her penetration into the substance of Iguassu Falls, which she learned about it through concentrated observations and thoughts over a long period of time?
Her painting by give shape to such a huge flow of the waterfall falling down with reverberating earth and sky in a huge sound of explosion, makes us entangled by the feeling to face the prodigious power of Mother Nature just like being before our very eyes. This is a product of intuition which can interpret the substance of Mother Nature as well as image's clarity which have been built up through the long time of observations. Her sense of beauty which enables the vitality of enormous Mother Nature to be condensed on canvas, and it leads to a product in the true meaning of passion, by surpassing her skills of hands. Her painting is just more than a simple visual impression. By compressing the surging of the magnificent nature on a very small screen in a very convincing way, she makes the border of painting and reality vague. This is a result of the expressiveness of high density as well as reality which is very close to object's substance. Concrete description or straight-forward expression only to the substance, its appeal is so strong. Her painting deludes us a pretense that we are standing in front of that waterfall, and it makes us feel small. Such a sentiment comes from the true acceptance of the strong persuasion of her painting.
However, she is not satisfied with just a capture of such a sentiment or its realistic beauty of form. Rather, she tries to have the stance of a hard-headed objective observer in case of realistic paintings. So she intends to view the waterfall from a distance. In case of paintings as well, which give a feeling of visual oppression by standing close up against the waterfall, she holds on to her stance with cold eyes, in order to keep the objective view out of that landscape. Such an objective view might be crucial to projecting the concept of Oriental blank space into the painting. So, I attempt to guess her resistance not to be gone under in front of the existence which is from a flow of energy, makes us comfortable.
These days, she approaches waterfall's image in more various perspectives. This is why she is willing to take acryl and ink-and-water to attempt new expressions according to materials. In reality, such paintings by watercolors are proven to be more effective in expressing inner emotions or unconsciousness than concrete forms. Painting by watercolors raises an issue of the speed in painting as a value of expressions. Maybe she is trying to use acryl or ink-and-water to escape from the concrete expression in forms by speedfully painting.
Just like proving this, we can find a vigorous and coarse breathe in her paintings by watercolors. From her brushing in a coarse and powerful way just like giving shape to the flow of falling down waterfall, we can feel some speed. Such a speed approaches with more realistic feelings. I think it might be an inevitable choice of hers in order to give shape to the power of waterfall's flow by narrowing her view. Instead of destructing forms, she enhanced its expressive purity by freely releasing the condensed expression from her inner mind. The expressive purity is a display of her desire for the free will to express the inner world without any limitation. She intends to disclose the substantial power which is hidden in forms, not to see just forms. However, we cannot say the substance is not the only thing to satisfy all needs. But, by experiencing her different world from the visual 'beauty', we can have an opportunity to see new potential power. In other words, we can have some opportunities to enable our aesthetic consciousness or sensitivity in full bloom, which has been locked in ourselves by external conditions. Furthermore, such an unexpected world which is brought by unconsciousness or accidental expression, is a real opportunity to look inside ourselves from a point of view in self satisfaction on individual potential needs.
By allowing herself to have freedom out of the realist expression in forms, what was her achievement then? I cautiously assumed it might come from the fact that any power to touch people shall not be interrupted by anything, visual or inner-minded. It is obviously revealed by her resuming the oil painting. No, it is more adequate to say that she comes to be untied to only one field of aesthetics, realistic or abstract, to expand her expressions in a freer way. Nevertheless, we are not sure about which world she is more familiar with, the real world or the invisible world. It might be something like a longing for hometown. The self-confidence to take dictation of the landscape as it is, which is indelible even in her own consciousness, is a real freedom to make a choice by herself, I guess.
